A little bit about ourselves
|
Gaff Rig is a traditional sailing rig which for centuries propelled working craft, sailing ships and yachts alike. It is distinguished by it's four sided to the main sail, the top side being held aloft by the 'Gaff' usually a wooden spar. The Gaff Rig fell from popularity after the more efficient Bermudian Rig was developed allowing for much faster yachts and easier upwind sailing. This remained the status quo for many years until a resurgence of interest in the older and by now almost extinct Gaff Rig occurred in the 1960's. The Old Gaffer's Association was formed to give a like minded body of people a place to share knowledge, skills of traditionally rigged craft, of both traditional wooden construction and more modern materials and enjoy the fun of the traditional sailing movement. No boat is required (nor rejected), as all you need is an interest in traditional craft, sailing and a bit of craic and you are welcome to join the Northern Ireland contingent of the OGA!
